Airbnb’s newly appointed head of public policy, David Spielfogel, most recently chief business officer at electric bike company Lime, presumably learned a few things fighting back against municipalities seeking to limit or ban his company.

Airbnb is looking to tap into that experience and regain its own momentum after landmark regulatory setbacks in places like New York City and Barcelona.

From Airbnb’s perspective, it doesn’t hurt that Spielfogel understands the perspective of regulators, as well. Working for the then-mayor, Rahm Emanuel, Spielfogel was involved in early efforts by the City of Chicago to regulate Airbnb.

He has that regulatory experience, and a track record in operations, too, which should help as Airbnb fights regulators and expands into newish businesses like hotels and services.
