United can enjoy its Starlink advantage for now, but the benefits will be temporary. A few years from now its rivals will have caught up. Still, there is a first-mover advantage, and United may reap some success wooing frequent flyers from other loyalty programs with a status match.
Meanwhile, Delta is sticking with its decision to wait for Amazon Leo wi-fi. That might seem like an eternity to loyal Delta flyers because they aren’t likely to see it on Delta aircraft before 2028. And will it be as good as Starlink?
Delta is playing catch-up with United on another front, as well. Delta is building its own media network — as United already has done — to enhance onboard personalization and to reap the incremental advertising dollars.
These things will all even out in the long run, but Delta may feel some short-term pain.
